Feature Request: Separate thumbnail "preview" from submission-page "previews"; allow animations in submission-page "previews"

Pixel-art animations are difficult to appraise from a spritesheet. A common way of displaying short/simple pixel-art animations is with an animated gif. Right now, the best way of displaying an animation seems to be, to upload the gif with the "Files" section of the submission, and then link to it with <img> tags in the description section. But I think it isn't obvious to many users, which would explain why most pixel-art animations do not show any animated image sequences. Maybe this way should be made more obvious to the users.

But the obvious place to preview an animation, would be among the "Preview" images. The "Preview" images cannot be animated gifs, probably because the first "Preview" image of a submission is also used as a thumbnail in listings all over the site, like in Search listings and frontpage "most recent" listings, and animations would be annoying there.  But why is the thumbnail "Preview" among the submission-page "Preview" images anyway? In case of pixel-art, the submitter might want to (as I do) specifically make a 100x100 thumbnail "Preview", so that it wouldn't be scaled (which makes pixel-art look crappy) - clearly the thumbnail's function is then quite separate from that of the submission-page "Previews".

So, Feature Request: Separate thumbnail "preview" from submission-page "previews"; allow animations in submission-page "previews".

This issue needs to be fixed.  I'll try and get to it when I can, which may not be for a month or two.
