Lands of Languages (Language-practicing disguised as RPG)

Hi! As a spare time project I've been developing "Lands of Languages". It started a bit over 2 years ago after completing Chinese on Duolingo, and I wanted to practice more vocabulary in a more fun way. But I also got pretty addicted to developing the game and especially developing the procedural world generation.

The basic concept is a monster-capture RPG, where you explore a procedurally generated open game world, roamed by beings that you can battle, capture and train to higher levels. In the battles you then get translation challenges, which you need to solve correctly to do well in the battles, and with translations that become increasingly obscure at higher levels so you gradually get introduced to new vocabulary. In this way you get to practice a language while doing the "grinding" RPG tasks. Other features are e.g. trainer battles, quests, collecting items and crafting, mining, farming and other professions.

There's a lot more info on the game website: https://codespree.itch.io/lands-of-languages so instead I'll skip to a bit of:

Context with OpenGameArt

I discovered OpenGameArt after "releasing" the game and wow, here are many great creations, I often imagine adding when browsing a bit. I discovered the Tuxemon beings on here and added many of them to the game.

In the end I decided not to make the full game Lands of Languages free, but make a free and quite extensive demo version with the initial gameplay that should take several hours to get through. But at the very least I can release the assets I make for it under Creative Commons now that I also use a lot of Creative Commons assets. So far I've put the tileset and world objects, beings/monsters graphics and a bit of magma cave music themes here on OpenGameArt, I also put more music themes on itch.io which I have yet to put up here.

Finally, some in-game visuals:
