New Tutorials Section

By bart on 9 May 2012 - 12:29pm

We've just added an oft-requested Featured Tutorials Section to the Browse menu, which will hopefully some day be a huge repository of helpful information.  At the moment, we have three excellent tutorials there already, which I recommend checking out. :)

People wanting to submit new tutorials should post them in the Tutorials section of the forum.  Tutorials that are unique, high in quality, and well edited will be moved to the Featured section.

Huge Texture Update!

By bart on 28 April 2012 - 6:18pm

In response to a thread over at freegamedev, we've made some major changes over the past couple of days to how texture browsing works.  We've unpacked all of the texture archives on OGA and made the textures individually browse-able by category.  A big thank you goes out to the folks who have been helping manually categorize the nearly 4,000 texture files in the arcnive. :)

Note that there are a few more changes coming -- expect some navigation improvements in the near future, along with the ability to filter textures by license and resolution.

So, what are you waiting for?  You can use the new texture browsing interface by going to Browse -> Textures on the main menu. :)

A couple of new features

By bart on 12 April 2012 - 10:17pm

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that we've added several often-requested new features over the course of the last week.  These include:

  • Download counts for files.
  • Social networking links (not just on blog entries -- check the art pages too!)
  • More RSS feeds, including per-user art feeds.
  • A helpful submission guidelines link conveniently located at the top of the art submission page. ;)

Enjoy. :)

Announcing the Liberated Pixel Cup!

By bart on 11 April 2012 - 8:54am

OpenGameArt.org is very proud to announce that we are collaborating with the Free Software Foundation and the Creative Commons to bring you the Liberated Pixel Cup, a two month long summer contest about creating a consistent set of art and then making awesome games with it!

As you might imagine, this is big news for OGA -- there's no better way for us to further our mission of bringing artists and developers together to make awesome free and open source games than having the opportunity to work together with the CC and the FSF towards making that happen!

So, what are you waiting for?  Go, check out the site, and join us on IRC at #liberatedpixelcup on irc.freenode.net (click here to chat from your browser)!

Tempest in the Aether art contest

By bart on 11 April 2012 - 12:40am

FOSS steampunk MMORPG Tempest in the Aether is celebrating their first release with an art contest!  They're looking for both 2D and 3D art matching their distinctive style, so if you think you've got what it takes, head on over to their contest page and take a look!  They'll be giving away some significant cash prizes.

P.S.  Stay tuned for OGA's big announcement later this morning. :)

Guidelines for posting usable content

By bart on 7 April 2012 - 12:11pm

Hey folks!

We've had a big influx of art lately, which is awesome, but we need to make sure the archive remains clean and useful for people using it, which means I need to tighten the the guidelines on what constitutes art that is useful for games.  If the art you post doesn't meet these guidelines, admins will leave a comment and give you a few days to fix the issue or respond with a plan to fix it, if it will take more time than that.  So, without further ado, here are the guidelines.

If you have unanswered questions, please read the FAQ or contact us if that does not solve it.

Upcoming UI Changes on OpenGameArt.org

By bart on 30 March 2012 - 8:40pm

Seeing as how traffic is starting to pick up lately, I've decided that it's time to get serious about user interface design and start being consistent with all the professional file download sites up there.  Specifically, as an internet user, when I go somewhere to download a file, I expect to be bombarded with a barrage of misleading download links to shovelware, malware, and other crap I don't want.  The real download link, as we all know, should be small and off in some non-obvious place.  This is a guiding principle of the design of modern download sites, and it's time I stopped ignoring it.  Here's my latest design mockup (click the image to enlarge):

The OpenGameArt.org staff hopes that you enjoy this new feature!

Happy April Fools' Day! :)

Anonymous comments

By bart on 6 March 2012 - 12:53pm

We're changing our site policy slightly with respect to anonymous comments.

Since it's very easy to be rude when hiding behind an anonymous account, site policy from here onward will be to delete anonymous comments that we find impolite or trollish.  There's been a debate for a long time about whether to allow them at all, and we've decided in the past that there are a lot of anonymous users who add value to the site with their comments, and I don't want to force those people to register.  As the site grows, we may need to reevaluate that, but for the time being anonymous comments will be allowed.

Please note that I can't be in the business of policing every single comment to reach the site.  If I miss a rude comment by an anonymous user, please contact me through the contact form and leave a link to the page with the offending comment, and I'll take care of it.

Thanks,

Bart
