Unofficial Pixeland Challenge

Hello OGA! This month continues the Unofficial Pixeland Challenge! We've got a choice of some amazing premium asset packs as a prize, so make sure to take part!

The Challenge

This month, the challenge is simple! Create a game using a maximum of 3 colours displayed at any one time.

(Note: The colours can change over the course of the game, but every frame of your game can contain a maximum of three different RGB values. Consider using 1-bit assets or a custom post-processing shader to do this. The quality of the technique chosen will affect the submission judging.)

Prizes!

The winner can choose one of these three premium and awesome asset packs!

S4m-ur4i's Huge Pixel Art Pack Kronbits' RPG-Assets

Judging!

Judging will take place over the week after the challenge ends by Nat and Jhonxay. The submissions will be judged on these criteria:

  •  Graphical Quality
  • Uniqueness
  • Gameplay
  • Technical Quality

The challenge started on the 1st May and will end at 12pm (noon) GMT on the 1st of June. Please upload all submissions via the itch.io page (https://itch.io/jam/unofficial-pixeland-challenge-2) so they are easily accessible.

Thank you for competing in this challenge, and good luck. We would love to see your ongoing progress in the #challenge channel of the Pixeland Discord Server!

- Nat and Jhonxay

Sweet! I choose the colors red, green, and blue. Note, some monitors may display these colors so close together that they appear to blend and create different colors. This is purely optical illusion. :)

EDIT: darn, just noticed the RGB value specification. I'll have to rely on dithering. :P

Is that three colors counting black?  or three colors plus black?

so could our palette be Red, Green, Blue and Black.  Or is it limite to just two colors and black?  so Red, Green, Black, something like that?

By your wording, I'm assuming it's three colors counting black, black being a unique RGB value.  But figure it's worth asking to be sure.

is this a game jam or an art contest?  if a game jam, is there an itch.io page for it?

So the colour count includes black. You would only be allowed red, green, and black. Nothing else.

So it's a monthly challenge that we're hosting, this month has turned out to be more game-development related, however last month was an art challenge. The itch.io page is linked in the post, and is here: https://itch.io/jam/unofficial-pixeland-challenge-2

I've added the above specification on the itch.io page, so thanks for bringing it up!

Well ... you can create more colors by just switching the palette of the screen faster than the eye can handle it.

The 'point' of the challenge is exactly that. It's a way of challenging yourself to try something that you haven't done before.

Challenges like these massively helped me get into game development, and I'd love to see more people join this community as a whole. They are designed for anyone who wants to try something fun, as well as those who may be struggling to find their feet when designing games.

Spring might've bern asking in reference to the specific 3-color limit.

It is an odd limit for sure.   Doesn't correspond to any historical hardware that I can recall.

Ah, my bad.

The 3-colour limit is something I came up with off the top of my head. I was thinking about games with few colours, sort of like the Undertale boss fights. I thought - 'Hey, this would be good for a challenge' but quickly realised that 2 colours is a bit too limiting. So, 3 colours! It has no historical relevance, it's just a quirky little challenge I came up with.

it's very interesting.  I have an idea for something I'd like to do that would work great in 1bit.  But in a way that feels like the easy route.  Not that black and white isn't challenge, but it's very interesting to think about how to best make use of just one more color.  If it was four colors, you could just go GameBoy and I suppose even with 3 colors you could do a simple grey scale, but what if you wanted some actual color.  Which colors would you use and how would you use them?  You've definitely got me thinking so however you came up with this idea, it's working!  :)

It's up to you to decide what works best for the style of game you're making. I'm really looking forward to seeing if someone can make a game that changes the 3 colours throughout the game, but still has solid gameplay.

I was just wondering if you needed these 3 color games for anything :3

So is it any 3 colours? and you mention they can change during run time? is that all 3 colours or 1 colour from the 3? :)

Any 3 colours, but not anymore on screen at any one time, thats what i'm thinking. :)

You can use any 3 colours, and all 3 can change at any time during the game.

In effect, there can only be 3 RGB values on the screen at any time.

Well 3 colors looks doable. But I'm not sure if I will make something.

I'm more having fun sketching. I could make a second iteration of my breakout game from last summer.

What does that "Look at any existing prototypes you've made and see if you can work with one of them." on itch.io mean? Is it allowed to pick up old jam games? Well not that I'm planning on doing that, it might be better to start from scratch.

Wow, I'm already amazed at that screenshot!

The 'look at any existing prototypes' means you can use any existing projects you have, but I would prefer you to only do this if you're having trouble with coming up with a project.

Just over two weeks left for the Pixeland Monthly Challenge! I've seen some really cool things so far, and I can't wait to be able to judge them all!

If you haven't started yet, there's still plenty of time! Don't forget - There's a choice of 3 premium asset packs up for grabs from the winner!
