[Finished] Texturing a 3D model from OGA: 75 EUR
This is the second commission that I'm putting up.
You can find my previous commission here: http://opengameart.org/forumtopic/finshed-flare-tileset-compatible-bridge-75-eur
The job:
My request is to texture the following 3D model: http://opengameart.org/content/turbine. In the end I want a high quality piece of art that is usable in a 3D game (think: shooter or 3D RPG). You're free to fill in the blanks (how it should look like color-wise and maybe even improve on the model itself), but I think it should at least contain a diffuse, normal and specular map. It would be even better if there is some glowing parts. You're the artist, so you should know better than me.
Although the original model is in obj format, I would prefer that the final product (model + textures applied to it) is in .blend format. The final product has to be uploaded to OGA under a compatible license with the original model (I guess that has to be GPL-3.0). When uploading provide a rendering preview as well.
Payment:
I'm offering 50 euro (currently about USD 66) and payment will be through Euro bank transfer (SEPA) or in Bitcoin if the bank transfer is not a possible option (euros will be converted to bitcoin and directly send to you, so you can convert them back to your own currency). Payment will only be done when above requirements are met and I'm happy with the result.
Accepting offer:
When you want to work on this, post in this topic and I will mark it filled. You will get the first chance to provide the textured model within some reasonable time. If things aren't clear, feel free to ask questions.
Looks like my previous post disappeared. The amount was changed to 75 EUR a week ago.
I'm tempted to take this bounty, because I'm saving money for a Cintiq graphics tablet. However, this model looks a bit complicated. I'll have to turn this into a proper low poly model first, actually I've already reduced the poly count by 50% (from 22k to 10k) almost without quality loss. This small round thingy on the main body was over 3000 polys heavy. :P How low poly do you want the model to be?
I'm not sure if I should fuse all loose parts with the main body, that would be rather tedious, but I think at least the rectangular parts on the sides could be fused. The model also made some trouble in the newer Blender versions (caused crashes in some cases), so I'm using Blender 2.49.
I've made a test render of the turbine with a simple gray metal material (the model isn't unwrapped yet): http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/593/turbine3.jpg/
50% reduction is fine with me (if you think more is needed, without affecting the quality, be my guest. But I think 10K is reasonable). There was however an animation in the original model, were you able to save that?
I'll mark this topic filled, for you. Any indication how long it will take you to do the job?
@Skorpio oh cintiqs are nice. you shooting for a 12wx or the larger 21ux-dtk. I think people prefer the larger but its twice the cost.

Nope, but "reanimating" it won't be difficult. ;)

A few days.

Probably the big one, but it's so damn expensive. I'm a bit worried, because our cat often jumps on my table and sits on my old graphics tablet. :P

well you can adjust the angle on the cintiq. so just angle it so the cat will just slide off =) mostly people comment how big the larger really is. like it takes up the whole desk big. so make sure you have plenty of room =D

Feel free to do the re-animation, but it isn't a requirement.
The textures are almost done, I just need to work on some details. I still have to rig and animate the model. Here's a render: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/525/turbine9.jpg/
Ok, bit different than I expected. Some questions:
1) I see only the colors "blue-ish" and grey, why did you only pick these 2 colors?
2) The panels and "tubes" are all grey, do they still get some color?
3) Could you give a bit of explanation why you made the texture like this? What is your reasoning why the engine should look like this?
Objects like this are often painted in only one or two colors, sometimes with a few visible unpainted metal parts, and look rather boring.

I left more parts "unpainted" and also made it look a bit worn out, because that looked cooler, but I'll probably include a clean metal texture as well. I could make the pipes black or give them some other color if you want. What I wanted to add are some warning signs or text, maybe on the side panels.
I'm not sure what you expected. If you wanted a specific color scheme, you should've mentioned that.
Edit: For some reason the last link gets changed when I post this. From Wyss%26Cie.jpg to Wyss&Cie.jpg
Ok, that is clear then. The worn out look was already clear to me. Some warning signs or text would be nice. If you would include some glowing parts (upper part, or some parts of the pipes) that would even be great. But like I said in the initial post, you will know better. To me it doesn't need to look uber-realistic, just good for a sci-fi themed setting. So please, go on.
Myckel, do you have any other art to compare it to for a better understanding of the direction?
Here are two new renders: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/12/turbine10.jpg/

The turbine is a bit darker now, because I rendered it without ray mirror (which isn't feasible for realtime rendering anyway). Instead I added a simple environment map for fake reflections (not really visible on the renders, only in the viewport). Also I added some signs and painted the pipes black.
the black wires do not read well with the shadows. thats just my opinion though.
I think it looks already a lot better now. The black wires are fine with me.

@Skorpio, thank you for the result of the job. It was great doing business with you.
Thank you, too.
