Are "progress threads" mandatory?

Lately I've seen more and more (well, not that many) progress threads... Is it a rule? A unspoken rule? A recommended thing to do? Just wondering.

I'm coding all by myself (foreveralone.jpg) and posting progress could become a little bit of an overhead...

Thanks!

I have not seen it stated as a rule but it seems that people wish to have people see what they are working on throughout the contest. I would recommend it because it helps motivate me. Also, who knows, someone may suggest something to you that might make your game win.

Yes, it's a fact that it helps you to get motivated, even if you don't get any feedback. Maybe I'll start posting tomorrow :)

Nothing is compulsory.

You don't have to post every day, a screen shot once in a while would be great though :D

(Don't expect to get any feedback though, unless your screenshots are super duper awesome ;)

There is another way of looking at a progress thread though...to me personally it is a commitment to deliver.

I'm coding by myself as well, and it is really easy to give up at the first major hurdle.

Yeah I agree that posting updates could be time better spent actually working on the game.

However I might start a thread when my game is a bit further along (you know, when it actually resembles a game).  Would be good if someone started a general purpose thread for updates (like there was for the artwork phase).

Nooo, one general thread would be confusing, because all snapshots potentially look alike... not like the artwork one, where each project looked different.

It's not that time consuming to post in a progress thread IMO. I only work on my entry in the evenings...

Wonder how much response I would get from a 'roll call' thread, just to see how many people read the forums and are actively working on an LPC coding entry - with a very very brief description of what genre and platform they are working on...

One additional facet to having a progress thread is that the more interesting you make your project, the more likely you will be to be able to get art requests filled if you need something custom.

I post updates every 3 days, which means I should end up with around 10 updates by the end of the contest / month (Give or take 3 entries, since I expect I might blog either a lot more, or a lot less near the end of the contest).

It's not a rule, but in open source projects, communication is always welcome :-)

I dont keep a progress thread, may be I will do once we get a working demo, but you can follow the progress on sourceforge. We are keeping designs, tools and everything in svn.

Anyone else not thought of a name for their game yet?

I still have to decide where my game's story goes, the name will follow that... and I still need a cat character for my game... I have this one http://untamed.wild-refuge.net/images/rpgxp/discworld/greebo.png . I contacted the author, but I'm still waiting for a response :(

@cemkalyoncu your game looks like it'll be a tower defense kind of game? If that's the case, I believe it'll be the first to make that combination with this RPG style!

@RainyMirror: It will be an RTS/RPG combo with unique battle mechanics. You can check the design documents in the SVN.
