Pixie is a pixel art girl made for the game Ultimate Smash Friends.

I used grid paper to help me draw the most difficult poses.

I also have made an upgraded version with longer hair and black suit.

Hey it. Great.

Is it ok to use it in my game(probably ad supported) without releasing my code? It's clear that your name will be in Credits.

The art is licensed as CC-BY-SA 3.0 and can be used without opening your code.

Isn't using the sprite in a game share alike or building upon?the SA part of this license limits it.

The art can be used under the rules of one of the licenses.

CC-BY-SA 3.0 OR GPL 3.0 OR GPL 2.0

The license and the SA clause are only applied on the art not on the source code. So you have to distribute the art under the same condidtions as here (free distribution, mention the author, etc.). You can license your source code like you wish (OSS or CS).

I hope that clarifies that for you. :-)

what about this?

http://opengameart.org/content/faq#q-proprietary

Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0This license requires you to release the source your entire project under the same license or one with similar terms, such as the GNU GPL. If you're trying to sell a game, this is probably something you want to avoid, as you will be required to distribute the source code, and your users will be allowed to distribute it as well.

Well, I don't know much about licenses but as I'm the creator of this artwork, I suppose I can argue.

What I meant using these licenses is that Pixie should remained open source and be offered the same in every game that uses her. The rest of your game may not be open source. I'm OK with fraang. You're the owner of the code, not me.

But it's a pity you don't leave your sources open. It doesn't prevent you from selling your game nor making money with it, I think. You can ask for donations, for example, if your game is nice and fun.

If you keep it open source, you'll be able to use other artworks from Open Game Art, and may be have help from the open source community for your code.

Unfortunately there is no easy solution for this situation but you can do the following:

  • Get a permission for using the art (Already done by doudoulolita)
  • If there are any troubles with third parties get a formal permission like this:

I <author's name> grant <user's name> permission to use my art asset <art asset's name> in his/her commercial game <game's name>. This permission expires never and can only be withdrawn by myself <author's name>.

The permission has to be signed of course.

I hope that helps. :-)

Should i get a formal permission for pixie?

what does it mean only the art should open source and not the whole project?is linking to this page enough?

For me, a link to this page is OK. Doudoulolita is my artist name, please use it in the credits of your game. My real name is Laurence Veron-Dor, you can use it also.

If one day you need a formal permission, I'll do it but I don't think you'll need it.

You must know that Ultimate Smash Friends has recently got a new programmer who will transform the game in javascript, so we will probably use Pixie again in it.

As the art is open source, don't forget that other people may use it as they wish, changed or unchanged.

For me, it's not a problem to change my character in USF to avoid having two identical characters in two different  games but it's more work to do.

It would be better if you make changes for your game, as you are allowed to by this license. You may change her hair style or her dress, for example, to make her suit your game style exactly.

Thank you very much for you art and your permission.

btw i think CC-BY license is closer to your wishes for your art.
