Most people here are probably already aware, but our community over at freegamedev.net is offering all kinds of support for new (and old) open source game projects.

So instead of setting up and managing a forum etc yourself, join us and concentrate on making your game better :)

Traditionally we have been hosting forums for projects such as SuperTuxKart but recently we also added a few new services:

Edit: removed some old stuff

A federated microblogging instance at https://social.freegamedev.net (includes open source games planets and federates with Mastodon)

And some other cool stuff in the pipeline.

All without ads, volunteer driven and committed to using only FOSS tools.

Let us know if we can set up something for your project (needs to be open source) :)

Oh, wow, that's just awesome. Sadly I'm on way too many social networks already, but if something happens to one of the others, FreeGameDev.net might just be a place for me. Good work setting up all that!

That is why these federate and bridge :) If you are on Discord for example you can interact with our Mattermost chat through a bridge, and any ActivityPub compatible service will work fine together with Hubzilla. Hopefully there will also be a cross bridge soon.

I have both Mastodon and Discord, but no friends on your network. Yet. :) Was thinking more in the way of alternatives.

So quite a few of the above services came and have gone again. Life happens I guess.

For now because of the Freenode situation be made a new IRC server:

irc.freegamedev.net/6697

There is a #opengameart channel that bridges back to the old #opengameart channel on Freenode, but I guess people moved over to Discord? A bit of a pity given the nature of this site.

I think most people did move to Discord. Before Discord was linked here though there was a duscussion about the use of the IRC channel i'm sure, and i think the conclusion was that no one was using it, and those that was didn't really step up and say anything.

I did see on the Discord server that someone is working on a 'bridge' so this is good news for those that are using the IRC to connect both channels.

"A bit of a pity given the nature of this site"

I don't think its a bad thing that OGA has a Discord Channel, and i'm not sure what you mean by the nature of the site. OGA still does what it has always done since the beginning, How does linking a Discord channel change that?

Yeah, I set up the bridge now.

My comment was related how this website is all about libre-culture and open-source, while Discord is really the opposite of that.

Oh yeah, i see what your saying. well, its a tough dilema i think, the libre-culture and open-source is a wonderful thing and has great moral values and i'm all for it of coarse and OGA is a part of that, and i suppose using something like Discord is a bit of a 'double standard' type of thing, but it is a tool that is used to connect the libre-culture communities with other communities as well, just like the IRC, only used more often, which to me is no more 'double standard'  than using platforms such as Youtube, Twitch, Twitter, Facebook, which OGA has as well.(although no ones using them) :)

I can definately see your point, but maybe a co-existance can be had without anyone feeling let down, especially those from the libre communities.

Maybe others will say someting and a discussio can take place again. :)

Thanks for taking the time to set up the IRC bridge.

We now also have a webchat: https://freegamedev.net/irc/#opengameart

Supports channel history, so no need to idle all the time as with legacy IRC.

Oh and thanks for featuring it in the top left corner here on OGA :)

So the XMPP bridge is also working now. Syntax to join any channel on irc.freegamedev.net is: channelname@irc.freegamedev.net simple, right?

So for the #general (bridged to #freegamer on freenode) it would be #general@irc.freegamedev.net and so on. If you want to enable a persistent connection (Not on by default) you can enable it in the room settings. But you should be able to use the /history IRC command in any case to get the older messages if needed.
SASL auth should (untested) work with an ad-hoc command on the IRC server user that opens on connection. For more info on the gateway see: https://doc.biboumi.louiz.org/9.0/user.html

Someone also tested it with the Matrix to XMPP bridge and it seems to work (no guarantees it will not break horribly though) use

/join #xmpp_#general_irc.freegamedev.net:matrix.org

to try it if you made the mistake of using Matrix :p

We are currently trying to reboot our forums with a completely new system (the old phpBB accumulated to much technical debt to be salvagable... a bit like this custom Drupal here ;) ). The new forum is based on Flarum.org and works quite nicely as long as you don't disable all javascript.

Check it out on https://freegamedev.net
