Weekly Challenge: Underground (due May 28)
Man, do I need a calendar reminder for this... but here's the next installment:
"Underground"
This time we'll run with a word and play free association. Something beneath the earth, counter culture or hidden culture, fantasy or realistic. Whatever you come up with when you think of the term. And, heck, something you may be doing anyway can be tagged that if it fits. Game art, of course, but also music, as we've seen, or sound effects or textures. We're as wide open as possible, here.
The challenge runs from Monday, May 22, to Sunday, May 28. U.S. folks, be sure to enjoy your Memorial Day on Monday, May 29. Grill out or something. You can start thinking about it early or even start working on it, but please don't submit it until that week.
You can post submissions to the regular art page but tag them Challenge and Underground. Including other tags based upon the content of your submission is also encouraged, of course. Please link to your submission in this thread as well if you would so we can be alerted to it.
And dig in!
:cracks knuckles: This sounds great! So many options... I'm in! :D
Mine is in! Basalt columns, in cliff face, floor, and cavern, with two cavern entrances.
I like how open this challenge is and how the other submission is SOO different than mine! I started working on my assets today, it's about an specific subculture :]
Here is my submission.
Btw, why don't you guys announce these challenges in a more noticeable way? I love it, but it took me months to realize you had these haha.
Publicity for these can be rough. Part of the problem is the irregular scheduling of it so far. We don't have critical mess yet, I think, to make this fully weekly, but nobody has been able to count on which weeks it is running. I'll try to tighten it up.
Perhaps we could "bump" the active forum topics so it stays at the top or at least seeable, but it does say at the very top of the site "latest blog post", maybe just make the font bigger? Your doing a great job Danorder, thank you.
have you heard anything more about a game jam? Is it something that we still want to do? I can't find the post about who was going to do it, il put something together if that went cold. :)
edit: sorry il move that question to another post.

Plus, some weeks / months are probably better than others for some people? I was sad to miss some of the other challenges, but with my medical issues I just couldn't do it. I'd agree with bumps, though, at the very least.
I threw in an extra file again. Ants: https://opengameart.org/content/ant-art
As usual it's not part of the competition, just submitted at the same time. In this case I made the art a long time ago but am just using this as an excuse to post it (since it's been three years already and I meant to a long time ago).
Tryed to enter a few others but time constrants are a bit short for 3d work this was a rush job.
Also I think the OGA banner should just be open to submisions would be cool if there were a bunch to choose from
just my 2 cents.
any who heres mine.

I really tried to get a submission in, I had a song started that was really fitting with the theme I thought. Unfortunately with my schedule right now, 1 week isn't enough time for me to finish a song, at least one that would be up to my standards and that I could be proud of.
I think that having one week to make something is a little easier to achieve for some art styles than others. For example, making a really detailed 3D model or a decently-mixed/mastered song can take a while. My suggestion would be to perhaps make this a monthly thing--it may be easier to be consistent if a new challenge is introduced on the first of the month and then we have the submission time be later on in the month--maybe at the 3 week point, then voting for the last week of the month.
If the goal of these challenges is to generate more quality art assets for the site, I think allowing people to take their time and make sure their submission is exactly the way they want it may get more people involved. I just think having such a short amount of time either A) scares people away who would want to participate because they feel they can't finish something in a week, or B) encourages rushed art that may not have realized its full potential.
This is just my 2 cents, not trying to criticize. I could see a few downsides to my idea as well. Anyway, I think these challenges are AWESOME and they really give me a reason to explore new avenues of creativity that I probably wouldn't have normally, so thanks for that :)
Congratulations AnthonyMyers: https://opengameart.org/content/grubcrawler
