Random idea: procedural content generation library

Submitted by bart on 4 November 2010 - 12:01pm

So, I'm just wondering...  how possible would it be to write up a library that had all sorts of procedural content generation functions?  It seems to me like some kinds of procedural content are fairly common in games -- particularly terrain, mazes, dungeons, etc.  Wouldn't it be cool to write up a library of functions that generated all of these things (given particular parameters, or perhaps a config file) and then returned a data structure containing them, so that your program could use that data however it wanted?  It could start out with a fairly simple parametric maze/dungeon/2d terra

OSARE map generator?

Hey Clint, didn't you mention somewhere that there's a random map generator for OSARE?  How's it working out thus far, and what language is it written in?

Anyone here ever worked with QtQuick/QML/QtDeclarative? I have some questions about it.

Specifically, combining QML and QtScript (as opposed to the JavaScript implementation that goes with QML) is something that people don't seem to discuss despite all of the possibilities it opens up.  I've been able to access QML objects with no problem from within QtScript, and while I haven't tried connecting signals and slots within QtScript, I can't immediately see why it wouldn't work.

So, has anyone else even gone down this particular road?  I'm curious if someone else has experience and can help.

I'm a reasonably good programmer myself, so I'll be happy to take a stab at any questions people might have.

Seeking examples of good RPG pause/menu screens

My current task with my RPG project is to build the pause screen, where you can select a member of your party, view their stats, equip them, and so on.  Just to get some ideas, which RPG menu screens have people liked, and why?

Resident UI expert, checking in. :)

Greetings, folks!

Unless someone comes along who's really good at this sort of thing, I'll be maintaining this particular forum myself.  I've got a lot of experience coding UIs, both on the web and in GTK and Qt.  If you have any UI questions, technical or otherwise, I'd be happy to answer them to the best of my abilities.

Peace,

Bart

Jumper (wip title for a wip project)

Show off your project!

I scratched together something with LÖVE, it's a platform jumping/tower game where you have to... jump up platforms :D

All the art I used was sourced from OGA, I credited the authors in the game description, but I should probably make a credits file in the source as well... anyhow.

Not very complex at the moment, and the code is horribly dirty, but it works! (requires LÖVE 0.6.2 though)

Oh, heh, almost forgot to link to the game: Jumper

3D Art

Hey 3D modelers!

I just wanted to drop a note letting you all know that I'm available to answer questions.

I've been doing 3D modeling since about 2002, right around the time when the campaign to buy Blender from the shareholders was going on.  (I was a poor college student at the time but I got to pitch in a couple bucks!)

I'm a programmer by trade, so I approach art from a very left-brain perspective.  Just like software is broken down into the atomic lines of code, 3D objects can be broken down into vertices, edges, polygons.

Hey all,

I'm going to keep a close eye on the programming area of the forums and hopefully answer any questions you have.

Some background: I've been programming for 18 years (started when I was 12) and I have a BS in Computer Science.  Been making little game demos from the beginning.  Recently I've been aiming for a larger game project called OSARE (Open Source Action Roleplaying Engine).  I enjoy writing engines from the ground up.
