Multi-elemental attacks in RPGs? Is there a cool way to do it?

Elemental attacks are a fairly standard idea in RPGs nowadays -- if your attack has an element attached to it, it goes against your foe's resistance to that element instead of their normal defense, so you have a chance of doing extra damage if you happen to hit them with the right element, or no damage at all (perhaps even healing them) if you hit them with an element they're resistant to.

Greets!

I'm not an expert on game design, but I have over the years played a lot of games and also given a lot of thought to the way I'd put games together.  If you have any game design ideas you want to talk about, bring them up here and I'll be happy to at least offer my opinion. :)

There are a number of other folks here with more game design experience than I have, and I imagine they'll be quite happy to chime in too.

Peace out,

Bart

Weekly Challenge: Seasons Change (Due Nov 22nd)

Weekly Challenge

This week's challenge is "Seasons Change".  I've been inspired by the deep-red, falling leaves around the university campus here.

In my mind, there are several ways to interpret this challenge:

1. Make art that conveys the feeling of Fall/Autumn turning into Winter

2. Make four variations on the same piece of art, one for each season.

3. Think of the challenge metaphorically, e.g. a character portrait of the same character at various ages.

How to best remove/reduce noise/background sound?

Hi,

I am absolutely not a sound guy, but I wonder how to do this? When one records sounds with a medium quality recording device, or just outside in nature, there are always tons of background noise! This is really unusable in a game.

As a good example, take this: http://opengameart.org/content/forest-bird-sounds it has very clear sounds but a lot of background! How could I filter that, using only open-source tools?

Hi,

This one http://opengameart.org/content/ritual doesn't seem to play. I asked the IRC and for one other person it doesn't play either, could you check that please?

[FILLED] Official OGA commission: $15 for a 32x32 pixel art treasure chest (both open and closed), plus bonus payments possible

Another little commission here:  I'd like to get a relatively quick pixel art treasure chest for Gaurav's HTML5 RPG (and for OGA in general, since it would be handy to have).

I'm looking for something in a regular pixel art style, using between 6 and 16 colors.  The chest should be wooden, and, detail allowing, should look old.

You can submit this one of two ways:

Favorite 3d map editing software?

This is an area I've only dabbled in, so I'm curious what all people like to use when they edit 3d maps?  Is Blender any good? How about Radiant (and all of its derivatives)?  How do these compare to commercial offerings such as UnrealEd?

32x32 top down treasure chest sprites

Resource Requests

Hi all,

I desperately need a 32x32 top down treasure chest sprites (one closed, one open) that isn't a derivative of the ones from RPG Maker software. :) I would prefer something old and rusty looking, but having spent hours searching online I'm desperate enough to use just about anything. If you can adapt one of the ones already on here to fit in a 32x32 square, that's fine with me.

Thanks,

Gaurav

HTML5 Canvas Old School RPG

Show off your project!

Hi all,

I am working on a demo of an old school top down single player RPG, perhaps like Dragon Warrior. The source code is based upon some sample code contributed from Mozilla. I discovered this community and OpenGameArt.org recently and have begun to use it in my demo.

Wav to mp3?

Hello, can anyone recommend a good program for converting .wav files to .mp3?(on linux mint, based on ubuntu)

Also, what kind of things should one pay attention to when converting? I have around 70 files to convert and upload to OGA and wouldn't want to redo work.

Also, why can't I upload .ogg files for the preview?
