I decided to give map making for Flare a chance, results from a couple of hours work so far:

Shrouded fields map 10 July 2011

Map is 300x300 tiles, most of the river banks are done. There will be a village on the island, surroundings will have accesses to dungeons and some farms can also be placed outside the village. This map is also the reason I placed this: http://opengameart.org/forumtopic/open-flare-tileset-compatible-bridge-7...

Some other things that might be needed for this map (no bounty for that atm):

  • Roads and road signs
  • Stones, boulders, etc.
  • Various trees and shrubberies
  • Hedges

I'll update this topic from time to time with my progress (which will be slow).

For rocks, trees, bushes, etc., it should be worth taking a look at some of (Mega)Glest's CC-By-SA terrain assets.  I might have a go at importing some of them into Blender for rendering, but don't hold me to that.  Their ground textures are somewhat lackluster though.

We have quite a few nice rock, bush and tree packs here on OGA too (in 3D art). I'm just too lazy to link them in here right now^^

I think there's a 256x256 size limit on maps currently, but I suppose that can be changed easily. You'd have to take that up with Clint, though.

Ok, thank you. Didn't know that. Tiled allows to rescale maps (you loose a bit on the edges though), so that would not be a problem for this map.

No problem. I think it looks awesome! I'm really interested to see how the village turns out.

Here is an update:

  • River banks are finsihed.
  • Reduced map size.
  • Placed some houses (5 different ones atm, copied a few times).
  • Some of the houses are on the wrong layer, so I'll have to move them.

Myckel, that looks great! Do you have any dirt/path/road tiles yet? I suppose you'll eventually need them.

Also, do you know how to take a tileset and write the FLARE tilesetdefs file for it? I'd be willing to help with that (if you need it, of course) once you've got your finalized tileset (eg. all of the tiles you will be using put into one big tileset image).

No road tileset yet, although I think for the short term I could use the bridge tileset (that is currently in development) to make a road.

I haven't looked at the tilesetdefs yet. I'll let you know if I need help with that when the time is right. I'm thinking of grabbing some OGA models and make tiles of that first. The map is still quite empty.

Just to let you know, Clint's new grassland tileset is in the repo and the git trunk version of Tiled can handle it properly now.
